Free Witches Brew Counting Activity for Preschool and Kindergarten
Stir up some not-so-spooky math fun with this free Witches Brew counting activity! Your preschool and kindergarten kiddos can follow a pretend recipe, count silly ingredients, and fill a cauldron with bones, eyeballs, and spiders. It’s a playful way to bring hands-on learning to your Halloween math centers.
I love a seasonal activity that gives little learners a reason to count. Instead of filling in another worksheet, children get to make their own witches brew while practicing number recognition and matching numbers to quantities. Grab the free printable using the signup form at the bottom of this post, then gather a few pretend ingredients to get started!

Free Witches Brew Counting Printable
This Halloween counting game turns a cauldron mat and recipe card into a simple pretend-play math activity. Children look at the numbers on their recipe and count out the matching ingredients. The setup pictured above uses little bones, eyeballs, and colorful spiders to make the brew extra silly.
You can set it up on a tray for individual practice or use it with a small group. Keep each type of ingredient in its own container so children can find what they need and check their counting as they work.
How to Set Up This Halloween Math Activity
You don’t need a complicated sensory bin to make this activity inviting. A counting mat, a recipe card, and a few festive manipulatives are enough to create an October math center.
- The free Witches Brew printable
- Pretend bones
- Eyeballs
- Plastic spiders or counters to represent them
- A tray and small bowls for sorting ingredients
- Optional: child-friendly tweezers
Print the activity and place the cauldron mat on a tray with the recipe cards nearby. Sort the pretend ingredients into bowls before inviting children to make their brew. Choose manipulatives that are appropriate for your students and supervise their use.
How to Play the Witches Brew Counting Game

- Read the recipe. Invite your child to name an ingredient and identify the number beside it.
- Count the ingredients. Have children move one object at a time from the bowl to the cauldron, saying one number for each object.
- Check the brew. Count that group again and compare it with the recipe before adding the next ingredient.
- Empty and repeat. Sort the pieces back into their bowls so another child can make a witches brew.
For example, the recipe shown in the photo calls for 7 bones, 2 eyes, and 3 spiders. Ask, “How many eyes does your brew need?” Then have your child count and add two pretend eyes. Working through one ingredient at a time keeps the counting manageable.
Preschool and Kindergarten Math Skills to Practice
As children make their witches brew, they practice number recognition, counting objects, and one-to-one correspondence. Moving each ingredient as they count helps them keep track of which objects they have already counted. Ask how many they added to connect the final counting word with the quantity in that group.
You can also build in fine motor practice by offering child-friendly tweezers for picking up ingredients. For children who need support, cover the other lines of the recipe and work on one group together. Invite confident counters to compare two groups: “Are there more bones or eyes? How can you tell?”
Easy Ideas for Halloween Math Centers
Use this free Halloween counting printable during small groups, morning tubs, or a classroom celebration. Model a round first, then let children take turns being the recipe reader and the ingredient counter. Partners can check each other’s groups before clearing the cauldron.
