The Alphabet Haunted House turns letter recognition into a mystery! Write letters on the blank ghost cards using an invisible ink pen. The letters stay hidden until children shine the pen’s UV light on each ghost. Once they discover a letter, they find it on the haunted house recording sheet and color it in.

What You’ll Need

  • The free Alphabet Haunted House printable and ghost cards (download below)
  • An invisible ink pen with a UV light
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Tape for a classroom letter hunt, or a sensory bin and filler

How to Set Up the Invisible Ink Ghost Letter Hunt

Print the haunted house recording sheet and cut apart the ghost cards. Write one alphabet letter on each ghost using your invisible ink pen. Allow the ink to dry, then hide the cards around the classroom or tuck them into a sensory bin.

Give students a recording sheet, coloring tools, and a UV light. As they discover each ghost, they’ll shine the light to reveal its secret letter, name the letter, and color the matching letter on their haunted house. It’s a simple way to combine letter identification, movement, and a little Halloween excitement!

Option 1: Halloween Alphabet Scavenger Hunt

Tape the ghost cards around your classroom at child-friendly heights. Invite students to walk around, find each ghost, and use the UV light to uncover the hidden letter. After identifying it, they return to their haunted house worksheet and color the matching letter. This makes a fun write-the-room style literacy activity without needing students to write each letter.

Option 2: Halloween Alphabet Sensory Bin

For a hands-on literacy center, hide the ghost cards in a sensory bin with your favorite classroom-safe filler. Students dig for a ghost, shine the light to discover the letter, and color its match on the recording sheet. Use larger, age-appropriate materials and supervise the UV light and sensory bin.

Option 3: Reveal Hidden Letters with a Regular Flashlight

No invisible ink pen? No problem! Print the ghost cards with the letters on them, then glue a blank ghost card on top of each letter card. Cut out the layered ghosts. Students shine a regular flashlight from behind each ghost to reveal the hidden letter through the paper. Then they name the letter and color its match on the haunted house worksheet.

Tip: Try ordinary printer paper instead of cardstock, and test one ghost first. Thick paper or too much glue can make it harder for the flashlight to reveal the letter. A slightly dimmer room may help, too.

Make the Halloween Letter Recognition Activity Your Own

For beginners, hide just a handful of letters at a time, especially the letters in students’ names. For children ready for more, use the full alphabet or ask them to say each letter’s sound after revealing it. You can also repeat letters that need extra practice.

This Halloween literacy activity works for small groups, morning tubs, independent centers, and classroom parties. The best part is watching students discover that the seemingly blank ghosts are hiding letters!
